The Starter Home Program

A housing initiative for Flagstaff’s workforce community.

In response to ever increasing demand and a local affordable housing crisis, we are pivoting to help multiple households each year through the revolutionary Starter Home Program! Designed and engineered in Flagstaff by a cohort of community partners, the Starter Home Program approaches affordable housing in an entirely new way.

A Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

To make our homes affordable, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Arizona uses a variety of resources. We partner with municipalities to get access to affordable land leases or set up land trusts, work with local contractors to keep construction costs low, and utilize volunteer labor.

Generous donations and grants cover the upfront costs of building each Starter Home, which will then serve multiple low-to-moderate income households for decades to come. This sustainable approach maximizes the impact of the initial investment and promotes community, stability and growth.

Safe, Decent, Affordable Homes for Local Working Families

Northern Arizona is an incredible place to live, but homeownership is often out of reach for many families, especially in Flagstaff where the median home listing price has reached $755,000, a 93% increase from 2019. But with the help of donations from people like you, the support of local contractors, and the partnership of community organizations, we've been creating homeownership opportunities for low-income Northern Arizona families for over 27 years.
